Aoife's class The Romans Project (sheet sent home with same information) 4/11/19 - due date 25/11/19
The Romans SESE Project
Aoife’s class will begin their SESE project on the Romans
this week for homework.
Due date:
The Project is due on Monday the 25th of November 2019.
Presentation of
project: Students can present their projects in any of the following
formats:
Scrap book, booklet, poster or using ICT (PowerPoint) etc.
Presentations to
the class: The first 10 students on the role will present their
projects to the class on Monday the 25th and Tuesday the 26th
of November (5 students each day). I hope to do a project per term so each
student will present a project to the class at some stage. Projects will be
displayed in the classroom and students will be given time to look at each
other’s work.
Sources of
information:
Kidrex and Kiddle are child friendly search engines which
can be used to research information online.
Books from the library can be a great source of information
too.
Ideas for how to
carry out the project:
Week One
Research your topic and gather all the information you are
going to use.
Where will you find this information? Who will help you?
There is a lot of information out there so …
Think of your audience and ask yourself these questions-
1. What do I want the
children/teacher to learn from my project?
2. What are the key words that
they need to know at the end?
3. What will I start with,
what will be my middle part and what will be my end part?
4. What are the keywords for
these three parts?
Suggestions for
how to organise your project:
Start with – The origin of the Romans, the timeline
of the Romans, their daily life, culture and religion, their rulers (Emperors)
and the food they ate.
Middle Part- Choose 3 or 4 topics to focus on: homes,
work, leisure and pastimes, clothing, the military, the Roman Empire, important
buildings in Ancient Rome.
End Part-
·
Compare life in Ireland and life in Ancient Rome,
what I like and what I do not like.
·
Explore the discovery of concrete by the Romans
and the effect it had on their lives.
·
Examine the power and influence of the Roman
army on the expansion of the Roman Empire.
Week Two
·
Break your work up into themes and summarise the
information you have-get rid of any information you do not need e.g. I have
lots of information on the military so I will summarise it into the most
important and interesting parts and focus on other areas that I may not have as
much information on.
·
Think
of your audience and summarise the information you have in your own words
rather than copying it from the source of the information. Putting the
information into your own words will help you to learn. Copying and pasting is
not learning.
·
Think of:
1. How can I say this information
in an interesting way?
2. What nice words /new words
can I use?
3. How can I put the
information into my own words?
4. Which pieces of information
are the most important? What can I leave out?
·
Start writing/typing your work. It is a good
idea to write in pencil first and then when you correct your spellings/grammar
write in pen.
Week Three
·
Finish writing/typing your work. Make sure you
have lines so your writing is neat and clear.
·
Check all spellings, edit and correct. Do not
present work with incorrect spellings-get an adult to check it for you.
·
Will you use images/pictures/maps/photos?
·
Will you decorate or draw to make it look more
attractive to your audience?
·
Include the sources of information for your work
at the end of your project.
Monitoring project work
Parents should monitor their child’s project work and time they
spend on the project. Time management is a vital skill that children must
learn. Set aside a certain amount of time on the days project work is going to
be done and try stick to this.
We strongly advise parents to ensure that projects are
completed over a period of time and not over a night / weekend whereby parents
are involved in completing the project.
Students should be able to carry out this work themselves.
However parents should look over the work.
