Word Wizard – comprehension: pages 73 -75.
The Life Cycle of a Butterfly - correct your answers in your copy.
Part A.
1. The very first thing that happens in the cycle is the female butterfly lays a cluster of eggs on leaves or stems of plants. Inside these tiny eggs, caterpillars grow.
2. The shapes of the eggs can be oval, round or cylindrical and the texture of the eggs can be bumpy, smooth or wrinkled.
3. As a caterpillar grows it gets too big for its skin so it sheds its skin to make room for its bigger body.
4. The pupa or chrysalis protects the caterpillar from predators and extreme weather.
5. Before the caterpillar takes flight it has to wait for its wings to dry because they are wet, soft and wrinkled against its body at first.
Part B. – These are opinion questions so once you give reasons for your answers, they should be correct. You have to support your opinion with a reason.
Here are example answers:
1. I think the butterfly lays its eggs on leaves or stems of plants because then the caterpillar can eat the leaf it was born on and this will help it to grow.
2. I think the caterpillar eats its way out of the egg when it is fully grown and ready to make a pupa because it will have become too big for the egg.
3. I think if the pupa was damaged the caterpillar might be eaten by a predator or if there was extreme weather like heavy rain or snow the caterpillar might not survive.
4. I think it takes some species longer to form because each type of butterfly is different; some need warm weather so they might not form until the weather is warm enough.
5. I don’t think a butterfly bonds with its parents because there is no mention of that in the text and when the butterfly is ready it takes flight to look for food so it doesn’t seem to bond with its parents.
Part C.
• butterfly = a colourful insect
• eggs = what a butterfly lays
• caterpillar = what grows inside the egg
• chrysalis = another name for a pupa
• metamorphosis = when a caterpillar changes into a butterfly
• emerge = when the butterfly comes out
Part D. Fill in the blanks
• Blank 1 = insects
• Blank 2 = 4
• Blank 3 = leaves
• Blank 4 = bodies
• Blank 5 = pupa
• Blank 6 = emerge
• Blank 7 = changed
• Blank 8 = fly
• Blank 9 = flowers
• Blank 10 = start
